Richmond was the western end of the
Santa Fe Railway.
For nearly a century, cars were taken from the terminal
yard, along a short scenic branch line to the car ferry
pier.
Guarding a grade crossing on this branch line is one of
the
last wigwag signals in California, a Magnetic
Signalman
upper quadrant model.

The wigwags go into action as a switching move fouls
the grade crossing.
|
Passing the wigwags, the branch line continues
through
Point Richmond tunnel.

Today, the car ferry pier sits unused, as the Port of
San Francisco whithers away.
