Santa Clara, California

Santa Clara is one of my favorite places to watch trains. Here, the former Southern Pacific lines from San Francisco and Oakland meet on their way to Los Angeles. As a result, a substantial number of freight and passenger trains pass by in a given timeframe. Rush Hour is generally around 4-6 PM on weekdays. The line to San Francisco is now owned by Caltrain, while the tracks to Oakland, and Santa Clara Yard, are owned by the Union Pacific.

CP Coast, at the northern end of Santa Clara Station,
is where the Mulford Line (from Oakland) meets the
Coast Line (from San Francisco). These signals
control traffic flowing north from Santa Clara.
