The Grand Tour, Day Four [18 January 2003]

With the dawn just east of Kansas City, it's evident that we've finally left the southwest, and proceed to cruise through the midwestern plains. It's also clear that we're headed north, as the snow on the ground today contrasts with yesterday's painted desert scenes. Having arrived in Chicago roughly on time, I had just a few hours to poke around after dark. I've never been east of Chicago on a train before, so this was going to be something of a new experience. Since my train for the third link would be the Three Rivers, I was going to be lodged in one of Amtrak's new single level Viewliner sleepers. As we left Chicago, I couldn't help but notice how rough the tracks were, as we bumped along the CSX mainline into the night.
Dawn breaks on the George M. Pullman, and I find myself reading the plaque which commemorates the man.
A short time later, we make our station stop in Kansas City.
Kansas City is a crew change point, so I have some time to explore the exterior of KC Union Station. From an pedestrian overpass, the roofs of the Superliners gleam as a UP pulls through the station.
At Galesburg, I'm able to pop my head out of the downstairs door window for a few grab shots.
The Galesburg depot complex incorporates a display including, appropriately enough, a "Burlington Northern".
